In November 2009 Mauricio Rosales of Queens, New York City, pleaded guilty to petit larceny for stealing money from a former employer. New York law requires all convicted persons to submit DNA samples to the state CODIS database, even if a conviction is for a misdemeanor. In this case, the DNA sample resulted in a “cold hit” after the match with a DNA of a rapist who committed two rapes years ago. Rosales was immediately indicted with two rapes that took place in 2000 and in 2003. In one incident, the victim was an 11 years old girl and in the other a 19 year old woman.
