Allen Cappellazzi of New Jersey has been charged in Queens with forging the signatures of several New York Supreme Court judges on divorce papers.
According to the charges, Cappellazzi falsely represented himself to be a divorce mediator and as such was hired by two couples in two separate instances to mediate their divorce. Cappellazzi then returned the “divorce papers” “signed” by judges and told the couples that they were divorced.
The documents all contained case index numbers. The scheme came to light when one of the victims discovered that the index number on the divorce document was fake.
Cappellazzi is charged with grand larceny, forgery, criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of stolen property, scheme to defraud, and unlawful possession of personal identification information. If convicted, he faces seven years in prison.
