New York City Chief Crane Inspector Pleads Guilty to Bribery

James Delayo, former New York City Department of Buildings Chief Inspective for Cranes and Derricks, pleaded guilty to taking cash payments in exchange to falsifying paperwork on crane inspections and certifying crane operator exams.

From December 19, 2000 to January 17, 2008, Delayo received a total of $10,000 in cash payments from the company Nu-Way Crane’s owner Michael Sackaris for filing false paperwork indicating that Nu-Way cranes had passed the safety inspections, overlooking unqualified crane operators.

Delayo also provided Sackaris and Nu-Way advance copies of the New York City Department of Buildings’ written crane licensing exam for approximately $3000 each time.

Delayo faces a sentence of 2 to 6 years of imprisonment for Bribe Receiving in the 2nd Degree, a class C felony.
